Hankering to get out of the Lone Star State and visit a winter wonderland this holiday season? Consider the pristine destination of Lake Tahoe. Straddling the border between the Western states of California and Nevada, many anonymous little towns nestle against the lake’s lapping shores. But if you want to have a little bit of excitement sprinkled into your yuletide cheer, the town of South Lake Tahoe offers everything from a mini-Vegas atmosphere to a winter sports fanatic's dream. So whether you prefer to hit the slopes, the roulette tables or simply cozy up to a warm fire with cup of cocoa in hand, let Lake Tahoe make your holiday season sparkle.
Do
The towering Sierra Nevada mountain range is famous for its mélange of serpentine slopes: Skiers and snowboarders alike flock from miles around to make their circuitous way down the powdery hills. The popular ski resort Heavenly truly lives up to its celestial moniker. With everything from bunny slopes to black diamonds, skiers and boarders of any level can enjoy winter sports. And for the less physically inclined, simply purchase a lift ticket and ride the tram to the observation deck at the top of the mountain to see stunning views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Heavenly Resort also offers an ice rink should you choose to channel your inner Michelle Kwan, dog sledding, and sleigh rides that will truly get you in the holiday spirit.
What is Nevada famous for if not gambling? Step across the state line and play at one of South Lake Tahoe’s myriad casinos. Although slightly more old-school than their big brothers in Las Vegas, the casinos here offer just as much bang for your buck. Not sure where to begin? Try your luck at Harvey’s (18 Highway 50, Stateline, NV), Harrah’s (15 Highway 50, Stateline, NV) or Montbleu (55 Highway 50, Lake Tahoe, NV)—Mama needs a new pair of shoes for Christmas!
Eat
Fueling up in the a.m. before you hit the slopes is a must, and Heidi’s Pancake House (3485 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA) is the best place in town to eat a hearty breakfast. Specializing in pancakes (obviously) and also serving up omelets fluffier than the fresh powder on the mountains, this charming nook decorated Swiss Alp style will make you feel like the little be-braided girl could pop in to join you at any moment
After an active day spent frolicking in the brisk mountain air, your appetite is sure to be monstrous. Give it what it wants by indulging in a scrumptious dinner at Kalani’s (1001 Heavenly Village Way, No. 26, South Lake Tahoe, CA). This Asian fusion restaurant, though pricey, serves up fresh seafood flown in daily from Honolulu. Take in the swanky bamboo and glass décor as you indulge in specialties such as crab cakes, pork ribs or the catch of the day.
Sleep
The Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly (1200 Ski Run Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA) may look like a quaint log cabin, but upon entering the spacious lobby you know that your stay here will be nothing but luxurious. Cloudlike beds, Jacuzzi tubs, complimentary wireless, pet friendly—what more could you ask for in a hotel?
Despite the uninventive name, Inn by the Lake (3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA) is one of Lake Tahoe’s most sought after lodging destinations. Sweeping views of reflective water linger just outside your window, heated pools and hot tubs soothe sore muscles after a day of skiing, and lushly landscaped gardens offer a quiet place to stroll with your honey after a romantic dinner.
