Dressed to the Nines in 2009

By Samantha Baize

It seems like just yesterday we were picking out gifts, hiring caterers, and stressing about which dress to wear to which holiday party.  It's almost sad that our furs will be going back into storage and our boots into retirement until next winter.  At the same time, we can find pleasure in the fact that the grass will turn green again and our closets will be due for a wardrobe reorganization to prepare for  2009's hot new trends. Shannon Stone, owner of the chic YaYa's Boutique at The Shops at Legacy, enlightens us on what designers and styles will be invading our closets in the upcoming months.

Samantha Baize: What styles can we expect to see in 2009?

Shannon Stone: The most notable addition for spring is the jumpsuit. From dressy to causal, just about every designer had their take on the retro ‘blast from the past.’ This fits right in with the more casual bohemian look that is still trending for spring.

SB: Which jeans will be hot?

SS: Boyfriend jeans are super cute. J Brand “Clyde” is my favorite. Also, distressed jeans are making a huge comeback for spring. Be sure and check out True Religions “Joey” distressed denim.

SB: Are high-waist jeans and trousers still trendy?

SS: Yes, but more so in trousers. Look for lighter weight linen.

SB: As far as pants go, will we be seeing more of a wide leg or a narrow leg?

SS: Definitely wider legs are more popular, more loosely cut flowing fabrics from dressy to casual. Saint Grace and Young Fabulous and Broke are two brands that really stand out.

SB: What colors can we expect to see?  Will they be bold or neutral?  Are we seeing any patterns?

SS: Look for tonal, bleached neutrals for spring with a pop of neon color. Wallpaper floral prints are fun and feminine for spring as well. Holly Morgan has a darling sunflower garden tier mini-cotton voile dress that is absolutely perfect. And of course, you can also wear it as a tunic!

SB: Dresses have been a hot item for the past few seasons. Will that trend remain this season? What lengths will be popular?

SS: T-shirt dresses in colored silks and sporty jerseys are great, and who doesn’t love a strappy sundress to jump into spring? Long dresses are actually growing in popularity. I believe more and more people are discovering the wear-ability and comfort of a long dress for everyday occasions. A tiered, long dress or one with a ruffle will give it a fresh look.

SB: What about shoes?  Can we expect to see a lot of flats?  Wedges?  Gladiator sandals?

SS: Flats and wedges are both a staple for spring. The gladiator sandal has been toned down for spring. You will see a more relaxed, bohemian style sandal. T-straps are also important.

SB: Is the pencil skirt coming back?  What other silhouettes will be necessary to explore?

SS: The pencil skirt is back for spring, but other important shapes are making an appearance. Twill 22 did a really cute, tiered A-line mini. Also, take notice of the pleated skirt and for the fashionista, try a flirty petticoat style.

SB: What designers have really hit the nail on the head this season?

SS: The European line, Sita Murt, has a beautiful spring collection, using soft, flowing, tonal fabrics layered for a sophisticated, easy-to-wear ensemble. Neon brights were added for a touch of color. Holly Morgan has given us a beautiful floral palette with feminine, fresh shapes. And Twill 22, always a favorite, has captured the casual, relaxed essence of spring with bamboo, chic cargo pants, linen dresses and featherweight tops.
